During the week of Sept 4 – 9,2023, HPJ hosted a peer exchange with the Detroit Area Youth Uniting Michigan (DAYUM) to learn more about the shared and unique challenges of youth organizing in Hawaiʻi and Detroit. HPJ youth organizers and staff held workshops, conducted a Detour and downtown walking tour to share the impacts of militarism and occupation in Hawaiʻi, as well as shared the ways in which the overthrow and plantation system contributed to the Lahaina fires. DAYUM organizers taught HPJ how they created an entirely youth led organization and how they have challenged existing organizing formations. They also gave HPJ background on their own environmental justice campaigns and the successes and challenges of this work. Collectively, we learned much from each other and look forward to our ongoing collaboration.
